Hey guys , so how many times have you ended up in restaurants where they have 3 sets of knives, spoons and forks on either side of your dish? And then to add to the confusion they place two to three kinds of glasses as well. It  feels really bad and embarrassing to not know how to use the cutlery correctly. This is precisely why we thought of giving you some quick tips to save you from the embarrassment of using a dessert spoon for your main course the next time you are dining at one of the fine dining restaurants. Here are a few handy and simple tips to remember, which will ensure that you use the dining utensils just as they expect you too.

This is a typical table arrangement that we see at restaurants, however there may be some additions and subtractions depending on the cuisine they serve. For. e.g. a Chinese restaurant will also have a set of chop sticks and some sauces on the table.

  • The forks are placed to the left while the knives and spoon to the right. You are supposed to follow the utensil placement in order from the one farthest to the plate and work your way inwards.  Forks go on the left, with the salad fork first, and then the dinner fork beside the plate. On the right side of the plate you will find the knife, spoon and soup spoon. The fork and knife closest to the plate are for eating your main course.
  • When it comes to using the knife and the fork, you could adopt the American or British technique. The American concept requires you to hold the fork in the hand you write with. Whereas the British way requires you to hold the fork in your left hand and use it only to life the meal and eat it. This saves step as you don’t have to switch hands while cutting the food.
  • Identifying the soup spoon is easy; it would be large and oval. Remember, never blow air on the soup to make it cool. Let it cool on its own and then have it.
  • When you take a break from eating, that time your fork and knife should be crossed and left on the dish. Once you have finished eating they must be placed parallel on your plate.

  • Every time you pick up your glass of wine or have a sip of water, make sure you aren’t holding anything else in your hand and rest it back on the table once you are done.
  • The napkin should be placed on your knees and once you have finished your meal, leave it next to your dish. Place it loosely and there is no need to fold your napkin.
  • The glasses are simple to understand, as you can see it in the first picture. Apart from that you can always figure which glass is for what as they pour the drink into it.

Now you are all set to impress with your newly learnt cutlery skills, just keep these basic tips in mind and you will be all set for a good meal. Now on the table you can focus your attention on the food, chat and of course the food :)
