Must read for all Vodka lovers

The participants at our Bar-o-Scope events must have seen the bartender creating a lot of cool cocktail mixes by keeping Vodka  as the base. Apart from cocktail mixes, Vodka is one of the most sought after liquors after whiskey. We do consume a lot of Vodka at parties, restaurants, homes etc but we still don’t know much about this drink in detail. So, after reading this blog you will have more insights about what this drink actually is.

Vodka is colorless liquor usually made from fermented potatoes or beets or grain. The name “Vodka” originated in Russia where “Voda” means “Water” It is hugely popular in places like Russia and Poland for reasons more than just the origination of its name. This is a highly purified spirit and does not freeze as easily as the other spirits. So it became their favorite drink because of freezing temperatures there. Vodka does not have any smell or taste and this makes it very popular as a mixer. The content of alcohol is usually in the range of 40 to 60 percent by volume.

Like I had mentioned above paragraph, Vodka is a highly distilled spirit as much as it passes through 3 cycles of distillation and is also filtered through charcoal. Unlike Whiskey, it does not require aging and can be consumed as soon as the filtration process is over. There is also one more difference between Vodka and Whiskey, Whiskeys mature with age whereas Vodkas come with age of expiry. They are generally classified into clear and flavored. Now a day they come in a variety of flavors like Lime, Cranberry, Vanilla, and Chocolate. The smoothness of the vodka will speak for the quality of the drink.

The common brands available in India are Smirnoff, Absolut, Grey Goose, Fuel, Romanov etc.  Vodka can become a base for a lot of cocktail drinks and it can also be had with citrus flavored aerated drinks like Sprite or 7up. So even if you haven’t tasted this drink or are not a loyal enthusiast, have a look at our earlier post on cocktails and try some vodka based drinks on your next outing to a bar or a restaurant.  Cheers
