Muslim Wedding – A complete Guide

Muslim Wedding always looks scintillating to people. It is because their wedding has a lot of rituals and customs. Muslim brides mostly wear ‘garara’ on her wedding day. It generally has a ‘kinkhab’ fabric. In a northern India region, there is some kind of print on material which they call, ‘chapa’. But nowadays, even Muslim wedding brides are wearing lehenga on her D-day. Muslim wedding has variants of rituals.

Pre-Wedding Ritual

Salatul Istikhara of Muslim Wedding

This is a pre-marriage ritual. It happens when somebody has a call from someone for marriage. So, when the parents are really serious about the proposal. Then they perform salatul istikhara. Salatul istikhara is done when someone seeks guidance from God.

Mangni of Muslim Wedding

Engagement in English is what we call ‘mangni’ in urdu. Traditionally, groom’s family visit bride’s house and the groom’s mother put a ring on bride’s finger. Likewise, bride’s family visit groom’s house and bride’s father perform this ritual. But now bride and groom are exchanging the rings of their own.

Manjha

Manjha is basically equivalent to the haldi ceremony of hindu wedding ritual. Here brides wear yellow suit or garara or lehenga. Also, they are ornamented with flower jewelry. Family members apply haldi mixed with sandalwood and rose water.  So, for application of haldi, people use grass. Later on, the haldi bride of Muslim Wedding taken off with the help of milk. Likewise, grooms also perform this ritual at his own house. He generally wears white kurta pajama.

Mehendi

In this occasion brides wear green color dress. Nowadays, brides of Muslim Wedding are experimenting with variants of green. Here before applying full mehendi on hand, they perform ritual. Family members put a small dot of mehendi at the middle of her hand.

Sanchaq

Sanchaq is basically a dress and jewelry sent to bride. This dress is send to bride before hand. So, that she can wear it on the wedding day.

Baraat

Baraat is the welcoming of groom. His family and friends accompany him .

Nikah

It is a main part of Muslim wedding day. It is the day of their marriage. Here a maulvi has been appointed. He recites some dua and ask both the bride and the groom if they agree to marry or not. Maulvi ask the bride first. If both of them agrees then they will say ‘Qubool hai’ or ‘I agree’.

Meher of Muslim Wedding

Meher is what a groom has promised to give money or something to the bride. So, it is mandatory to give to the bride. After that they both sign the paper of nikah.

Post-Wedding Ritual

Rukhsati

After nikah and dinner, it is the time to say goodbye to the bride. She with teary eyes go to the groom’s house.

Walima

Walima is basically a reception. Here bride and groom’s family members invite all their belongings. So, it is basically a way to announce their marriage.

Navroz/ Dassera

After fourth day of their marriage, couples went to the bride’s house. They are welcomed with open hearted. Also, they are showered with gifts along with love.
