After scorching October heat and long wait, winter is finally stepping in. Though Mumbai does not have winter in her weather chart; cities like Delhi and Pune have a ‘put-on-a-hoodie, wear-your-scarf’ kind of winter. Appetite increases during this season and we exploit it to the fullest by digging in our favourite dishes.
Today, we list down 5 dishes that you should try this winter to make your winters better and healthy.
1. Gajar Ka Halwa
Made famous worldwide by Hindi film industry, Gajar ka halwa is the awesome Indian dessert made from carrots, milk, ghee and sugar. Carrots have good amount of vitamins, minerals and fibers. Sometimes, Gajar halwa is garnished by generous amount of dry fruits. So don’t forget to run an extra mile next day on your treadmill!
2.Sesame/ Til Laddoos
Sesame helps keeps your body warm and is a great cure to dry skin. You just have to grind it and apply the paste on your skin. Sesame when combined with jaggery and ghee is a great energy source. And no need to mention the awesome taste, right?
3. Nachni Bhakri and Bharla Vanga (Indian flatbread and Eggplant)
Okay, so this is not a very common dish. But is popular in rural parts of Maharashtra.This is a roti made from Nachni, which is also known as Red Millet or Finger Millet. It has high amount of protein and is also glutten-free. Bharla vanga is stuffed brinjal/ eggplant with Maharashtrian spicy stuffing. It tastes best with Bhakri
4.Spinach/ (Palak Paneer)
Yes, we know most of you might not like this entry in our list. But spinach is a rich source of Folic acid and vitamin C, which helps in fighting flu and colds- a common health issue during winter. You can use it in a fancy salad with a dash of olive oil or you can try it in a desi way- Palak Paneer. We all like the second option more, don’t we?
5. Potatoes/ Sweet Potatoes
This is a very common ingredient in Indian kitchen. Potatoes are a rich source of energy and can be combined with almost all Indian vegetables. Mashed Potato is a must-have in Thanksgiving dinner, now you know the reason? You can just peel a raw potato and eat it or you can boil it and top it with herbs like mint and basil. Its rusty flavor will definitely be your favourite!
